Glazing

I am glazing for my next firing. I have 2 glazes I am working with. They are both feldspar glazes but 1 is about 10 years old with a lot of added in glaze. Over the course of ten or so years I have run out of glaze and mixed up more, usually with the same materials but sometimes with feldspars, ash, etc., from different areas. The result is a glaze that is nice but not close to my original glaze. I have used that hodge-podge for 1/2 of the glazing and for the other 1/2 I have mixed up a batch of the original glaze. I want to compare both after the firing. These photos are of the original glaze as I am applying it.

2nd noborigama firing.

I have started preparing for the second firing of this series. This firing will be feldspar glaze on the same clay body. I will mainly fire the first room and am trying to figure out what to do with the second room. I have about 2,400 tiles I can put into it just to help even out the air flow.

Feldspar bowl accented with gold leaf

I have added gold leaf to this bowl, under the leaf is Japanese made lacquer.  I like the dreamy quality of it.

Feldspar glazed cup repaired with silver.

I fired this cup a long time ago, maybe 10 years or so. It broke and I decided to do some restoration work where there were missing pieces and use silver as the covering metal. I like the look now even though there is still some of the under-structure lacquer showing through.

Beaded bowl

I usually like austere designs. Simple, spare.   This bowl doesn’t fit that aesthetic but it is one that I wanted to make. It is an ash glazed bowl with the holes opened for the beads before wood fueled firing. I then put the beads in and bonded them with a polymer.

Bowl, white slip

I have 2 pieces out of my last firing that I think are exceptional. I have already sold one of them. This is the other. It is a kohiki piece with beautiful crawling in the clear over glaze.

Vase

I love the way this tiny vase holds its own. It is about 1 inch, 2.5 cm., tall.

First sale.

I had the first sale today from the firing I just finished.

I took the piece in the photos to an antiques dealer I know to show it to him.  I think it is the finest piece out of the firing, at least so far. He ended up buying it for 25% more than what I told him the price was. That is a first for me.
