I wrote a while ago about getting scammed on Etsy. https://nanbanceramics.wordpress.com/2011/09/22/etsy-adventure/
If you look at the bottom of the post you will see a comment by a guy who sells white ‘geisha’ face makeup who is based in Osaka. The guy who scammed me, Thomasz Karpinski, did the same to the commenter. It looks like he danced with the wrong guy. The guy in Osaka, in a show of great patience and detective work, tracked the guy down. He goes to Greenwich University in London. He made a bad mistake by using the Greenwich University email system which has brought them into the problem. If you want to take a look at our friend Karpinski look at this video, second 49-50,
He is decked out in items that he has stolen from at least 10 people through Ebay and Etsy. The mask he is wearing is stolen from a woman in England through Ebay. That was his second big mistake. It brings him into the London police jurisdiction.
There is suspicions that he has scammed almost 100 people this way. Nice guy.
I think there are some very important lessons to be drawn. Neither Ebay nor Etsy did anything to see patterns to this guys behavior. In fact Etsy thought what I did, warn other Etsy sellers about Karpinski, was beyond the pale. In a somewhat Orwellian twist, they had me getting nasty email from their “Trust and Safety” department. Paypal also completely missed the boat. If anyone should have caught him it should have been Paypal.
Be careful, sellers.
great outcome to an all to common sad tale…
as a fellow internet vendor the shadow of suspicion always seems to fall upon us and NOT upon criminal customers/buyers….
